First ff, you need a rangefinder that’s accurate to within a yard. Pretty much any decent rangefinder over $200 will do this. The expensive ones claim they’re accurate to half a yard, but honestly? With wind and everything else affecting your shots, that extra precision doesn’t really matter. What you actually want is something that gives you the same yardage every time you aim it at the flag!
As you may know the slope function does the calculation for you on uphill and downhill shots. So if you’ve got a 150-yard shot but it’s uphill, it might tell you it plays more like 160. Super helpful for using theright club for the job!
Here’s the thing though – if you play in any tournaments or club championships, using slope isn’t legal unless you can turn it off. Any good rangefinder will have a switch. If you’re just playing for fun with your buddies, get one with slope. Trust me, you’ll love it on hilly courses!
Most rangefinders are either 6x or 7x, which is perfect. You can see the flag clearly without your hand shake making everything blurry. I wouldn’t bother with anything higher – it just makes it harder to hold steady. And definitely don’t go lower or you will have a tough time to see the pin past 175 yards.
This is where the cheap ones really show their weakness. Better optics mean you can actually see clearly in the early morning, dusk or when it’s overcast. The image is sharper, there’s less distortion around the edges, and the flag actually stands out instead of blending into the background.
If possible, try looking through one before you buy it. A clear, bright image makes such a difference when you’re using this thing 40+ times a round.
When you lock onto the flag, the rangefinder will vibrate so you know you got it locked on the pin. While it may seem minor, but it’s actually pretty important – especially when there’s trees or water behind the green and you’re not sure if you are locking on the target.
Bushnell calls theirs “Jolt.” Other brands have different names for it. Not an absolute must-have but you’ll definitely appreciate it if you use one that has it and then try one that doesn’t.
This is not so much as issue as most likely you will be sticking it to you cart frame BUT if you are walking then it will be a factor.
Most of the newer ones are pretty compact. The older models can be kind of bulky and heavy. Also pay attention to the shape – rounded edges are nicer than sharp corners when sliding it into your pocket!
A few other things worth considering:
Pin seeking – This helps it lock onto the flag instead of the trees behind it. Pretty important feature that is a must have IMO.
Scan mode – You hold the button down and sweep across the course to get distances to different stuff. Useful for checking how far it is to clear a bunker or where you want to lay up.
Display type – Some have red displays, some black. Red is easier to see when it’s sunny out. Black works better in low light. Ideally look for one that you can change the display.
Battery – They usually use CR2 batteries and last quite a long time. Not something you need worry about but I prefer ability to recharge it so you don’t have to bother with buying batteries.
Waterproof – If you play in iffy weather, make sure it can handle some rain. Most are at least water-resistant but the cheap ones might not be.
Magnetic mount – Some stick to your cart which is convenient. Saves you from digging it out of your pocket every time.
Case – A decent case keeps it from getting banged up in your bag.
